Chemistry – Middle School

First, we will spend some time to understand what Chemistry is. It is of no use that we want to study something and we don’t understand what it is.

Please make notes as you go through the material and videos in this course as most lessons have quizzes that you need to answer before you can go to the next lesson.

You will need to get at least 70% for a quiz before you can proceed to the next lesson. You can take quizzes as many times as you like. This will ensure that you really understand the work.

The very first thing that we will have a look at, is to try and establish “What Chemistry is?”

We will then have a look to see what we will study in this Chemistry Course.

Do not be worried if any of these concepts at this stage sound unfamiliar, that is why you are taking this course and will learn about the wonderworld of Chemistry.

Let’s get started.

What is Chemistry?

We can say Chemistry is the branch of science concerned with the substances of which matter is composed, the investigation of their properties and reactions, and the use of such reactions to form new substances.

We can also put it in other words:

Chemistry, the science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of substances (defined as elements and compounds), the transformations they undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during these processes.

This definition will make more sense as we proceed with the course.

Watch the following video. What do you learn from this video?

Also, watch the following video to get more background on Chemistry.

You do not have to remember everything in the video for now but it will give you an idea of what Chemistry is about.

We will study certain parts of Chemistry in this Cambridge IGCSE course.

Read a few times through the following 14 chapter topics and think about it. Have you ever heard about it before? Just familiarise yourself with the words although it might not mean much at this stage to you.

The idea is that your brain makes a link to the topics so that it is not unfamiliar topics when we start studying it.
